The Covered Bridges of Ashtabula County-Part 1

There are about a dozen or so covered bridges up in Ashtabula County. Last Sunday, Mary and I took a driving tour of the bridges. There are two driving tours. We took the shorter one.

Covered bridges were popular in the 1800's. They offered protection during nasty wind, rain and snow storms. Today you'll see plenty of Amish buggies zipping across them.

Here is the first of our bridges built in 1868. It's on Doyle Road and spans Mill Creek.

Front view of the Doyle Road bridge. The construction style is called "Town lattice truss."

Interior side view. Note the lattice construction.

Inside view. The arches span over 90 feet.
